Our giving
Second only to the Lottery
It is a little known fact that Freemasons are second only to the UK National Lottery in giving financial support to non-masonic charities and good causes. And taking this a stage further those funds so freely given to external charities are raised from within Freemasonry as opposed to being gathered by an organisation from the general public for onward distribution. So it is the Freemasons themselves who give generously to support both masonic and non-masonic charities.
Each Lodge has an officer called the Almoner who is solely responsible for ensuring that all members and their dependents are cared for. This is an important role and does not necessarily demand a great deal of money being raised by the Lodge Members. On odd occasions there will be a need to finance support for a Brother or his dependents. Money will be available at a local level to assist. There are also regional and national initiatives that can be brought into play should the need arise.
The Freemason's Grand Charity supports a wide range of non-masonic causes. One of the more recent initiatives is to support the Scout Association with moderate grants for new units being established or to pay for adult leader training.
